Well as a fashion designer, ties have sizes for a reason. I am a menswear designer for a popular fashion line…Ralph Lauren. As one of the members of our design crew, we all feel that the right size tie is absolutely crucial to looking slick. If your tie is too short or too long, then your whole look is thrown off, however if your tie fits just right the your outfit will be tre chic. Although I am a girl and I’m guessing you are not (sorry if im wrong) and I also work in the fashion industry so you might not exactly care about style and class the way I do, so if that is the case then feel free to rock the long tie:)…….

Http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/lacingmethods.htm This site is pretty good, plus it tells you if it will shorten the laces, the comfort of it and the difficulty.

I used the Ladder style on my vans, if you’re familiar with those they also have quite long laces. It did shorten them a lot, but I still had room to work with them, and I just tuck the bows into my shoes anyhow. The Ladder is good because it’s adjustable. Some of the styles that shorten the laces aren’t, so you might want to give that one a try. IMO it looks better with skinnier laces, not so much the wide flat ones. You can see that in the pics given as well.

Ok so I’m moving into a dorm room and I want to put up curtains?

I want to hang curtains in my dorm room but we’re not allowed to put screws in the wall or damage a wall in anyway. So foes anyone know if there is another way to hang curtains, maybe like a pole that sticks to the wall, if you have an idea do you know where I can buy it, stores or web links. Thanks, oh and curtains are allowed in the dorms

Aaron answers:

Yes ! There are curtain rods that are telescopic, it’s like one tube, with another tube set on a spring inside. If you twist the smaller tube a bit, you can adjust the length. The ends of the pole are non slip, and so if you adjust it to a nice tight fit between the 2 sides of the window, it will stay nicely in place.
I would recommend light weight curtains with that though, not the real heavy ones.
Check these rods :

Why the Koran stated that the earth is flat and its mountains are like poles which create a balance?

so that the Earth does not tilt. See Qur’an, Suras 79:30 (And the Earth after that He(Allah) FLATTENED it.; and 18:47 (and you will see the earth a leveled plain).

The Jewish/Christian Bible revealed that the earth is round in Isaiah 40:22 and via Job (26:7). Speaking of God in Isaiah 40:22, the Jewish/Christian Bible says; “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. Funny isn’t it, that the Bible said the earth was a “circle”, even when everyone believed the earth was flat”. Job 26:7 says, “He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing”.

Panel style curtains – look ok on a plastic rail?

Hello
I am going to make curtains to cover the fronts of some open clothes shelves. The areas to cover are about shoulder high and 40″ wide.

My plan is to make panels in a pale cream colour (I know, boring! but it’s a very small room) and my question is this -

Will the panels look odd hung on a plastic rail, being as they will be flat, without the usual gathers that curtains normally have?

I would have liked to use a wooden pole, but it would have to be a really small version, ie as thick as your thumb and not the usual size. I don’t think they come that narrow (not where I live anyway!).

Aaron answers:

If the shelves are set into a space with a wall either side, you could buy white extending tension rods which are thin like you want, but they have to be extended to the width of the walls and then tensed to fit. Easy to fit too. But if you don’t have a wall either side I would perhaps do away with the pole all together and I would use velcro. You can buy velcro which has sticky self adhesive on one side, and the other side is to sew onto your material. Velcro is great for something like you want. Stick it on the shelf, sew it on the curtain and hey presto!! Quick removal too if you want a change.

As long as you weight the bottom of the material it will look great, otherwise it could end up looking scruffy if it doesn’t hang flat. You can buy the weights by the yard at any good fabric store, they are really thin like a string of plastic coated bobbles.

Good luck.

An Iron curtain has descended over my town. What should be done?

I am a councillor for a fairly big working class town in England.
An Iron curtain has descended over my town. What are your stories and suggestions?

I am a prominent community figure in a fairly big working class town in England. Until the turn of the century, it was a rather quiet place to life, but ever since the EU regulations of 2004, a tidal wave of Eastern European immigration to my town has unfortunately left it like, well, Berlin for most of the 20th century.

Relations between the English and mostly Slavic immigrants are getting worse in recent years and gangs are forming and street battles are becoming more and more commonplace. That’s not to say it’s all bad; a lot of people get on, but the once ‘isolated incidents’ are becoming less, well, “isolated”.

Some people, English AND immigrants, are turning the situation into a joke and treating the town like the former divided Berlin, referring to their homes in the town in either “East ———” or “West ———” and even put up signs saying “You are now entering East/West ———”.

I’m planning to run for council in the next election. I’m running on a platform focused on the issue of immigration and informal segregation in the town.

What I’m asking is what you, the people think should be done, as well as your own stories, so that I can further build up my platform and hopefully get some change done in my town and help make it a better place to live in once again.

Aaron answers:

It’s a shame you don’t tell us which town this is, so that we could find evidence for this dramatic division. There’s no doubt that immigration can cause tensions, especially at times of unemployment, which can be exploited by groups who don’t really care about any community, and instead have an agenda of racism and thuggery. Hopefully you’re not one of those, as your activity here is private we also can’t get a picture of where you’re coming from.

The answer really is for people, native and newcomer, to make efforts to accommodate, respect, and understand each other; most people do, but there’s always a few idiots in any group who stir things up. We should remember that years ago the Irish were blamed for everything from crime to drunkenness to stealing jobs and women, but in time they blended in, and now only the hard core racist nutters ever think about it; it will be the same with other immigrant groups, and it will happen the sooner if we all work together to create an environment that’s safe and respectful for everyone.

Migration – including all the Brits living and working abroad – is not going to go away no matter how much some people wish it so. It brings both benefits and challenges. Rather than trying to turn back the clock to a mythical harmonious past, we need to face the future bravely. If our people can’t get jobs, instead of blaming immigrants, we need, really need, to focus on education and attitudes of some of our young people. If we have too many people on benefits, we need to set about reforming the whole welfare system, to stop our people becoming dependant, instead of worrying about the small part of benefits going to foreign residents. If people can’t get housing, instead of blaming immigrants (and forgetting the equal number of natives that have left), we need to think about replacing the social housing sold off under right-to-buy, and asking what we can do about the huge numbers of family houses occupied by single people…….

In other words, focussing on immigration just stops us from finding the real answers to our problems.

You could have found the answer a dozen times over in Google in the time it took you just to type out the question on here.

Why don’t you just do your own homework instead of asking strangers online to do it for you?

How to make my room more gothic?

Okay, so Im goth, and I kind of want my room to look goth, too. Im REALLY limited though. I have a small room, which I share with my little sister, but shes too young to really care how I decorate our room. Eventually, we’re going to build onto our house so I can have my own room, but thats not going to be for a long time, so yeah. The walls are white, and Im not allowed to paint them, until I get my own room. Theres also the problem of the furniture. My bed, dresser, and the little bed side table thingy are all dark wood, and the little table thingy and the dresser look pretty antique and “gothic”. But my desk and bookshelf are really pale wood, and my chair is white, and they all look somewhat modern. My curtains are these dark purple beaded down to the floor curtains, so when the lights are dim, the whole room looks purple, which I like a lot.
But I have like no money to buy new things, so do you have any do it yourself ideas to make my room more gothic? Particularly, how to make little accessories that I can put on my dresser and desk and stuff?

If you can pull together 10 bucks or so you can go to the dollar store and buy black iron looking candle holder and white candles, skulls (whatever your into) and u could cover the surface of your furniture in a dark cloth as well. The dollar store is already putting things out for halloween, you might find something interesting. That’s just a start.
Ps: don’t burn the candles unless you have permission, ok.

i have no idea what this poem is trying to say, please could some one translate this poem into modern English?

That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall,
Looking as if she were alive. I call
That piece a wonder, now: Fra Pandolf’s hands
Worked busily a day, and there she stands.
Will’t please you sit and look at her? I said
“Fra Pandolf” by design, for never read
Strangers like you that pictured countenance,
The depth and passion of its earnest glance,
But to myself they turned (since none puts by
The curtain I have drawn for you, but I)
And seemed as they would ask me, if they durst,
How such a glance came there; so, not the first
Are you to turn and ask thus. Sir, ’twas not
Her husband’s presence only, called that spot
Of joy into the Duchess’ cheek: perhaps
Fra Pandolf chanced to say “Her mantle laps
Over my lady’s wrist too much,” or “Paint
Must never hope to reproduce the faint
Half-flush that dies along her throat”: such stuff
Was courtesy, she thought, and cause enough
For calling up that spot of joy. She had
A heart—how shall I say?—too soon made glad,
Too easily impressed; she liked whate’er
She looked on, and her looks went everywhere.
Sir, ’twas all one! My favour at her breast,
The dropping of the daylight in the West,
The bough of cherries some officious fool
Broke in the orchard for her, the white mule
She rode with round the terrace—all and each
Would draw from her alike the approving speech,
Or blush, at least. She thanked men,—good! but thanked
Somehow—I know not how—as if she ranked
My gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name
With anybody’s gift. Who’d stoop to blame
This sort of trifling? Even had you skill
In speech—(which I have not)—to make your will
Quite clear to such an one, and say, “Just this
Or that in you disgusts me; here you miss,
Or there exceed the mark”—and if she let
Herself be lessoned so, nor plainly set
Her wits to yours, forsooth, and made excuse,
—E’en then would be some stooping; and I choose
Never to stoop. Oh sir, she smiled, no doubt,
Whene’er I passed her; but who passed without
Much the same smile? This grew; I gave commands;
Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands
As if alive. Will’t please you rise? We’ll meet
The company below, then. I repeat,
The Count your master’s known munificence
Is ample warrant that no just pretence
Of mine for dowry will be disallowed;
Though his fair daughter’s self, as I avowed
At starting, is my object. Nay, we’ll go
Together down, sir. Notice Neptune, though,
Taming a sea-horse, thought a rarity,
Which Claus of Innsbruck cast in bronze for me!

Aaron answers:

In this poem Browning develops an idiolect for Ferrara. Unlike poets like Gray and Keats, Browning does not write as himself, for example, by echoing the work of other poets, because to do so would be untrue to the Duke’s character. Ferrara betrays his obsessions by nervous mannerisms. He repeats words associated with the Duchess: the phrases `as if … Alive” (2, 47), `there she stands’ (4, 46), `Will ‘t please you’ (5, 47), and `called/calling … That spot of joy’ (14-15, 21), `look,’ variously inflected (2, 5, 24), `glance’ (8, 12), `thanked’ (31), `gift’ (33-34), `stoop’ (34, 42-43), `smile’ (43, 45-46), and `pass’ (44). These tics define his idiolect but also his mind, circling back to the same topic again and again. He takes pride in saying, “I repeat” (48). He also obsesses about his height, relative to others. He stands because the Duchess stands on the wall, and he requires his listener to sit, to rise, and to walk downstairs with him side-by-side. He abhors stooping because he would lose face. Last, Ferrara needs to control the eyes of others. He curtains off the Duchess’ portrait to prevent her from looking “everywhere.” He tells his listener to look at her and to “Notice Neptune.”

We always drop unprepared into a Browning dramatic monologue, into several lives about which we know nothing. Soliloquies or speeches in a play have a context that orients the audience. Browning’s readers have only a title and, in “My Last Duchess,” a speech prefix, “Ferrara.” Yet these are transfixing clues to a drama that we observe, helplessly, unable to speak or to act, as if we turned on a radio and, having selected a frequency, overhear a very private conversation, already in process and, as we may come very gradually to appreciate, about a murder and the maybe-killer’s search for the next victim. Readers familiar with Browning’s writing and sensitive to nuance perceive the speaker’s pride and cold-bloodedness. Many miss the point and are astonished. “You say what? There’s nothing in the poem about him killing her! Where do you find that?” A century and more ago, when Browning still lived, readers presented him with questions about this poem. He answered them cautiously, almost as if he had not written the poem but was seeing it himself, attentively, after a very long time and was trying to understand what had happened.

Good luck

All you need is a pair of curtains put them on a tension rod and you have a closet curtain , you can either go sheer to match the colour of the walls or a complimentary colour .

Or you can also buy 2 single twin size sheets, and use the larger hem to feed the rod in.

Aaron answers:

Instead of matching the curtains to the paint, or the furniture, instead think about how you want the room to feel. If you want the room to feel bright and airy and calm, then choose white or sheer curtains, with a white roman or rolling blind for privacy. If the look you want is one more of cozyness, then choose darker shades like burgundy, or brown for the curtains. But also consider the scale of the room. If it is a tiny room, long dark curtains might make it feel claustrophobic, especially if you have bulky dark or patterned furniture.
This is how interior decorators plan out which window dressings to choose!

Aaron answers:

You have several options. You could try to find material that has a pattern with both colors in it and have curtains made (that is if you can’t find premade curtains with a suitable print!) You could also use a chocolate brown/espresso color in a textured silk. You could use a natural linen.
I would suggest going to a fabric store and getting swatches. They will cut you TONS of swatches of any fabric that you think may work. Then you can bring them home and see what you think! Be creative, sometimes the colors you would never think of, work the best! Good luck!

There is much debate about whether it is useful, but those that use a task killer app swear by them. Sounds like you may have a rogue app running down your battery.

One friend with an android phone swears by his task killer. I don’t use one personally, but I use a dock in my vehicle and a charger at work.

Go into an android forum and read about task killers, or just download one from the market. Experiment by shutting down apps one at a time to see if you can figure out which one is draining your battery, if that is the problem.

Aaron answers:

The Samsung Moment is definitely a great phone but lots of people are having disappointing battery problems these days. These new tips from what you said you already tried should help you squeeze out a little more juice:

-Use Black Backgrounds. White is an energy intense color and uses a lot more energy than black so wherever possible use darker colors. You can even Google in black at http://bGoog.com. Mobile phones with AMOLED screens like the Samsung Moment have the biggest savings displaying black with some units using up to 7 times less power!

-Check Email As You Need It. Most modern cell phones can check email automatically at some configured schedule or have it pushed to the phone. These features can consume energy needlessly when you want you phone running the longest. Simply turn them off and check your email manually or extend the schedule to have the checks as far apart as possible.

-Turn The Volume Down. Only have your volume set as loud as you need it when listening to music or watching videos as the louder it is the more power it’s draining your battery.

-Keep Your Battery Cool. Hot heat is a battery killer causing poor performance and can even cause your battery permanent damage! Avoid leaving your phone in your car on those hot summer days.

-Go Without Those Good Vibrations. While we all may like to have vibrate mode on, it should be turned off! Vibrate mode on your phone uses a lot more power than a basic ring tone on your phone.

I hope this helps… Cheers!

1) Smartphones are not known for their extended battery life. They have a lot of items draining the battery. Set your display to either dim or automatic brightness, might save same what. Also download and use Advanced Task Killer, see 2)

2)Advanced Task Killer (ATK) is a definite need, it keeps unneeded apps from running, which can use the battery and also slow your phone causing lag.

3)Widgets are kind of like little function/power keys for the app it represents, almost like a shortcuts], but it also causes the app to function. Ex, if you have the ATK widget on one of your home screens, you just tap it and it kills the unneeded Apps. The Google widget will add small Google search bar to the screen you add it to, you can type in what you are searching for and it sill take you straight to the internet search page.

4)iTunes is owned by Apple and can only be added to an iPhone, However there is a music player already on your phone.

5)Your photos are automatically organized in the order they were taken.

6)To move an icon touch and hold it until you feel it vibrate and then you can slide it around where ever you want it to go.

7) I don’t understand what you mean by you can’t use them. Go into where you bought the phone and have them explain the apps to you.

using pythagorean theorem, side b = 0.6m

because the whole ladder is also a right triangle, you can find the distance from the wall to the foot of the ladder by using:

4m/1m = 0.6m/distance from wall to foot of ladder

Sure why not? Anything that will hold up the curtain and will be the width you want. I didn’t want to put up curtain rods on my small little laundry room window, but I had some pretty blue/white flowered curtains I wanted to hang there. (Actually I made the curtains out of a sheet.) Anyway, I used ribbon as a curtain rod, just threaded it thru the top hem, tied in a knot on both ends, then nailed the knots (inconspicuously) to the wall. Looks great. I used light blue rope material as tiebacks (a take off on the clothesline theme). I don’t let my Hubby into my pretty laundry room cuz he would make a Plant Shed out of it and mess up all my matchy-matchy stuff. Sometimes laundry gets done in there!

If there is concrete up there (which seems pretty far-fetched) then the answers you’ve already received are good ones. But, you MIGHT be trying to drill into a hidden nail or screw; the way to tell is to drill an inch or so away from where you really need to be. If you get through OK, then its almost a sure bet you’ve hit a screw or nail. Remove it and you’re good to go. Otherwise, move the rod a bit more toward the room and drill in a place that lets you get through.

Aaron answers:

Start in both the middle of the rod and the middle of the fabric. Wrap one half of the fabric in front of the rod and half behind. If you want to, you can make a loose knot in the middle to have both swags in the front. If not, continue to use the rod to drape the fabric in front and behind, loosening the fabric from bottom to top of each swag you drape. The bottom will always require releasing more fabric than the top to maintain the swag. If you want the swag tighter, simply pull the fabric over the rod tighter. You can stuff the wraps with those plastic grocery bags if you want a tightly wrapped rod. But no matter how you do the wraps or swags, make certain that when you get to the end of the rod, you either have used up all of the fabric (if you want the valance look) or you have equal amounts of fabric on both sides if you want a drapery look.

PS I just saw a beautiful gold sheer at Linens N Things (Design Expo Home Depots design store has the same thing for twice the price). Check out the close outs at both Linen N Things and Bed Bath and Beyond, they discontinue some beautiful sheers at really reasonable prices.

Aaron answers:

If they’re sash windows (double-hung), with ropes and couterweights, then you can’t use spray foam around the sash, which is normally the first thing I’d suggest. Failing that, you can either get clear window plastic, that mounts inside, using double-faced tape, then is made flat by gentle use of a hairdryer. The stuff is very thin and usually has to be replaced each year.

3M company makes a Window Insulator kit that has everything in it:

http://www.amazon.com/3M-2141W-Indoor-5-Window-Insulator/dp/B00002NCJI

What I prefer is thicker, clear plastic, which again, goes inside (don’t bother putting it on the outside; the wind will just blow it against your house wall). Cut it to size (leave 1-3″ spare room at least around the sides of the window.

Then attach it with clear tape (weatherstripping tape is best, as it is also clear and comes off more easily than duct tape (the gray stuff) or masking tape (beige). The latter two tend to pull off paint.

I’m not sure if they sell this where you are but a company called “Warps” makes crystal clear plastic. It’s called “Flex-O-Glass”. It can be re-used many times, as long as you don’t get it stuck to the tape when removing it! This is my favorite method, as it’s the easiest, and does not block your view from the window. (You can get translucent film for less, but it doesn’t look as good). Try this site:

http://warps.com/

They also sell those kits I mentioned above (“Shrink-It”) as well as the double-faced tape.

For pics of it: http://warps.com/detail.asp?section=windows&cat=vinyl-pane&product=7

Ask your local hardware or home improvement store if they carry it. Most do.

There are also indoor “storm” windows that come with frames that you make to fit your window and then attach with plastic “frames”. They, too, are removable and re-usable.

Here’s one site: http://www.wattbusters.com/Reusable-Indoor-Outdoor-Storm-Window-Kit-72-x-82.html

Or if you’re handy, build your own storm windows:

http://www.drywallinfo.com/how-to-interior-storm-windows.html

If none of these work, you could always move to the Caribbean (that’s my backup plan)!

looking out of the window?

I often work from home and my pc is positioned by the window in my living room. I live on a fairly quiet street and if someone walks along the pavement outside my house, they can see me through my window. Its amazing the amount of people that stare in almost as if they are seeing what kind of place i have! ( i hate net curtains or anything that restricts the light into my living room) I also stare out onto the street while im working. I just wondered what everyone thinks………..is it rude to stare into someones house as you pass their window, am i being rude by staring out onto the street? One woman last week actually stopped and pointed in at my sofa and said something to the person she was with, they walked on when they saw me sat here!!
It doesn’t really bother me that people look into my house (apart from the lady that pointed out my sofa to her friend) my point was more why do people do it? Im guilty of it myself, if i walk past a house thats nicely furnished, i can’t help but have a look!

Wow! Beautiful bed set! Nice choice.

I would advise keeping the curtain choice simple otherwise i think it could get a bit overpowering.
I think a cream/beige or a fairly light chocolaty colour will go quite well
For example, I would suggest one of the following:
(Search these on the target website. I would paste the link/URL but it’s quiet long.)

Living Textiles Baby Misha Bear Tab-Top Curtain Set

Livingston Grommet Top Panel – Multicolor

Casual Home Paisley Window Panel – Blue & Brown (54×84″) (in brown of course)

I am not just going to staple some sheets around the rods, as someone suggested. That is tacky! It’s just the kind that you slide the rod through the top and re-hang the rod. I need several for my apartment… at least two single standard-sized windows and one double window, and then two for door windows.
Aaron answers:

If your budget is tight and you have a walmart near you that has fabric look and see what they have on the $1 table get how ever many yards will need. If you have a sewing machine sew the tops and bottoms its simple to do and takes no time. If you don’t get fabric tape I think it’s called heat bond anyways it comes in different widths and you can iron on the tab for the top and the heam for the bottom. They will look great and cost about $5 a window. I have money and I still make my own I get bored with things easy and I don’t feel like wasting $30 on a panel for a window.

If you don’t want to do that check close-out stores we have a chain called big lots and they have great name brand curtains that are very resonable like $5-$10 a window.

Or check 2nd hand or garage sales but it will be harder to find exactly what you need.

Walmart has some sheer panels for about 9 bucks and check ebay you can sometimes find great deals for curtains there just watch the shipping charges so you don’t get ripped.
