Aaron answers:

I’d go with black and white checkered curtains like these:

If you are really set on black and red, check these out from walmart:

The other option is to go with red and white checked window treatments like these, then pick up black accessories:

If I went with the black and white, I’d complement the kitchen with red accessories. Red tea towels, tea kettle, and perhaps canister set:

red & Black tea kettle: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Copco-Somerset-Tea-Kettle-Red/5903086

Canister Set http://www.target.com/Cutout-Canister-4-pc-Set-Red/dp/B0014TJBOM/ref=sr_1_27?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&qid=1271884382&searchView=grid5&fromGsearch=true&searchNodeID=1038576%7C1287991011&sr=1-27&searchRank=target104545&keywords=set%20kitchen%20canister&searchPage=1&searchSize=30&searchBinNameList=purchasing_channel%2Csubjectbin%2Ctarget_com_age%2Ctarget_com_gender-bin%2Ctarget_com_character-bin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin

Decorating and Remodelling Costs?

Hi there!

I’ll be moving into a new 3 bedroom home with a lounge kitchen. I have nothing, meaning no furniture, beds, kitchen stuff, carpets curtains and it will need to decorated too. I really am starting from scratch.

So my questiom is this. How much will it cost to make it livable? I won’t be doing the decorating or carpeting, I’ll have to pay some one to do that. So all together with labour and material costs, also I’m keeping in mind that I won’t buy the cheapest carpets and wallpaper. So a reasonable cost would be great if someone could give me some ideas. I’ll be living on the Gold Coast by the way.

Cheers!

Aaron answers:

Figure $100k conservatively. You could pull it off for $10k, but really, do you want people to think you’re indigent? Appearances count. When you have your house warming party every single thing in that living room had better be SOMETHING. “Oh that? It’s a little something fun that Mies Van Der Roh threw together for Richard Nixon’s guest cottage…”. “I wanted to make a statement, and when I saw this Charles Rohlfs dining room set, I knew it was the right thing for the house. Yes, those are real rabbit skin back splats on the chairs”. Go cheap and you will have a lifetime of regrets. Buy quality, and it will be quality until you drop dead. Do you know what people would say if they walked in and saw one of those awful Ikea sofas? I’d be mortified. I’d go for an exciting mix of big names from NY, but spanning the decades. Don’t overdo it with the Eames stuff, its a bit specific and we wouldn’t want you lapsing into some retro sixties furniture fugue state. Regardless, do it with style and whatever your decorator recommends (I DO hope you are using one), don’t be afraid of the cost. It’s always worth it if you get to live in an environment filled with beauty and art, function and form. Trust me. I know.

Decorating Ideas For Cafe/Coffee Themed Kitchen?

I’m going to go with a cafe/coffee theme for my kitchen, I’ve found some cute curtains and wall border so far but what I’m looking for is some CREATIVE (cheap) ideas for decorating.
Things I can make and unique ideas, table center piece, wall decor, stylish organizing, etc.
Or even if you see something online that’s not a million dollars and would look good with this theme!

The colors I am going with are a rusty red color, brown, tan and possibly black.

Thank you and I can wait to see some ideas! =)
I meant… “I CAN’T wait to see some ideas”. LoL

Aaron answers:

This is the theme in my kitchen!

I use latte mugs (the large deep ones) all over to hold stuff: scrubbies and sponges by the sink, condiment packets (leftovers from take out), even in the bathroom (a white mug) to hold soaps, makeup brushes or what have you.

For a center piece – fill mug with coffee beans and put a flower (in a bud vase in the center) or just beans (agitate the beans every so often to refresh the scent.

Add hooks to inexpensive coasters (coffee themed of course) to hang kitchen utensils from.

Target has a trivet that is silhouette of a steaming cup of coffee.

A framed print on the wall (black frame and gold that matches the Harvest gold in my stove) that has “Mocha” on it.

There are decent coffee themed kitchen accessories at Wal-Mart and K-Mart right now, including rugs. Target had some a few years ago and I have 3 flour sack towels on a tension rod over my sink (no window). Anything to continue the theme.

Make fun place mats – laminate pics from books or magazines OR stamp or iron-on transfer fabric mats. Mine are store bought, but cheap; I think TJMaxx.

I rent and I have mismatched appliances but I have a black microwave, toaster oven, cappuccino maker (of course), utensils, pots and pans, dishes. Gold/camel is sort of the accent. Having a color and a theme unifies the room as much as it can be unified. I’m still working on this.

The colors you plan to work with are somewhere in my kitchen and blend well.

Have fun!

HELP! Cheap outdoor flea killer a.s.a.p.!!!?

The fleas in my dogs lot are horrible! I’ve tried moving the lot completely to another part of the yard. I’ve tried bathing him once a week and spraying him with flea spray. I’ve tried the little flea droplets from Wal-Mart b/c I can’t afford the studd from the veterinarian.

My question: Does anyone know of a relatively cheap outdoor flea killer that I can spray or pour over my yard that isn’t going to hurt my animals but will rid them of the ever-present fleas? They are getting to be a nuisance, so much so that even when I go ou tot feed him or play with him, they jump sometimes jump onto me and I carry them into the house and they bite me as well.

My dog is a Jack Russell Terrier and before you ask, no, I cannot bring him into the house all day everyday b/c he enjoys chewing door frames, ripping up carpet and linoleum arounf the doors, tearing down blinds and curtains, and puttig holes in the walls. I bring him in sometimes in the kitchen only but I cannot leave him alone.
I don’t leave him “alone outside all day long”. I spend quite a few hours both inside the house in the kitchen as stated as well as outside in his lot. Trust me, he isn’t ignored and banished from civilization! :)

Aaron answers:

Borax soap. Its a laundry soap in powder form. Does not hurt the dog or the grass, just seems to work well at killing the fleas. And by the way, I have a jack too. I hear ya, they LOVE to be outsdie. THey have a lot of energy and that seems to be the only place they play that is NOT distructive. With my Jack I have learned that giving him “chores” while he is in the house helps….

Carol asks…

Kitchen wall color…. what will match flooring, backsplash, cabinets?

I’m going for a cheap, quick-fix solution to boring off-white walls. So I figured it would be easier and cheapest to go with some kind of country theme. I don’t have the money for granite countertops, real tile floors, new cabinets, etc.

My cabinets are solid oak, and the counters are white.

I’m replacing the flooring with this vinyl:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=171376-84875-171376&lpage=none

I don’t have any kind of back splash, and I don’t have the time or money to tile, so I purchased a faux rock-wall, wallpaper to go under the cabinets, above the counter, AND, above the stove and under another set of cabinets:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180160910989&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=008

The curtains will be autumn reds, golden-yellows, and greens. And I’d like to add some rooster wall decor and other tuscan accessories. I’m lost on the wall color. I still want the room to be warm, but nothing like a bright red or gold.

Aaron answers:

I would stay with the Tuscan colors… A nice soft golden ocher or a soft green shaded down with gray…

Go for the bright colors in your rugs and hand towels, a few well placed mixing bowls etc.

If your using a border you can us two colors, the darker being on the bottom of the wall… I usually paint one wall a deeper color just for contrast…and don’t forget your ceiling… The fifth wall as far as decorating goes!

Have some fun! Good on Ya!
